Tech Tools & Toys for Holiday Travel

By Jennifer Cobb

How far did you travel for Thanksgiving? Over 40 million Americans journeyed 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Traveling for Christmas and New Year’s?  So are an estimated 68% percent of Americans, according to a survey conducted by Orbitz and American Express Publishing. The good thing though, is that motorists will receive a holiday bonus in the form of lower gas prices, which are at their lowest levels for the holiday since 2010.

Ahead of the expected busiest travel days of this year, December 22, 23, and 26, here are four tech toys and tools that can help ease holiday travel:

  • Owning a smart car

-       iPhone compatibility

-       Intuitive user interface

-       Blind-spot detection

-       Heated seats

  • Making any car a smart car

-       Investing in a “hands-free assist” device, allowing you to sync your smartphone so that you may continue to answer calls, texts

-       Stream music

  • Apps

-       Fuelzee: scan for cheapest gas stops

-       RoadNinja: locates discounts for food, shopping, hotels

-       Waze Social GPS: identifies traffic issues, speed traps

  • Passing the time

-       Audiobooks

-       Portable DVD players

-       Crayola camcorder

Whatever your plans are over the next few weeks, be sure to also check the weather. There are apps for that as well. Safe travels and happy holidays!
